Chapter 20

No Time to Waste

T here was a constant buzzing in Lin’s head, like the sound of a giant swarm of the blood-sucking bugs from Trollheim. She opened her mouth to speak, but her throat was too raw. Lin swallowed hard and opened her eyes, startled by the sight of Zara’s face hovering inches above her.

“Are you okay? You passed out and we couldn’t revive you.”

The woman’s words echoed in Lin’s head. She nodded in response, but she was not okay. Not by a longshot.

“I told you,” Azra said as her smiling face came into view. “She just needed to recuperate after expending so much magic. Get her one of those rejuvenation potions. That should fix her right up.”

William held out three vials, questioning which of them was the correct tincture. Lin pointed to the one on the far left and motioned for him to hand it over. Wasting no time, she popped the cork out and poured the swirling liquid over her tongue. She tried to swallow but failed. Her throat was too raw. With her eyes squeezed shut, Lin mustered all her willpower and forced the potion down her throat. It was like trying to gulp shards of glass along with the sweet liquid.

It took no time for the draft’s effects to take hold. A growing warmth quickly spread through her body, revitalizing her, replenishing her spent energy. Lin rolled out of the bed and hopped to her feet. “How long have I been unconscious?”

“Hours,” Zara said, her voice a mixture of annoyance and joy. “We all needed the rest, even though I didn’t want to take the time. Your friend, Enga, returned with news from her sortie. The palace is almost devoid of spiderfolk. She sighted a few Anansi and, outside of small bands of Arachne patrolling the corridors, the hallways were mostly empty.”

As though she had been summoned by mentioning her name, Enga appeared out of nowhere. She had a small basket filled with leafy green rolls. “Eat these. Troll food is quite delightful.”

“Palendor leaves wrapped around ground genkaroot,” Zara said. “It will stave off your appetite for hours, and it’s far better for you than whatever was in your potion.” The troll scowled when Lin waved off the food. “I made those myself. You will eat them and then we’ll leave.”

Enga held out the small basket. “Eat them. You’ll be glad you did.” The assassin pushed the food towards Lin, ignoring her protestations. “Eat, so we can go.”

With a huff, Lin stuffed a roll into her mouth. The explosion of flavors nearly made her moan. They were beyond tasty. She regretted not taking time to savor the food, but with the rejuvenation potion coursing through her body, she had no desire to eat. All she wanted to do right now was leave.

Lin swallowed down the last of her meal and made her way to the door, never bothering to see who was following. She didn’t care. The sound of steel rang out as she drew her long swords.
